Over the rising green dunes, hidden behind a rocky outcrop, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with Little Parakeet Bay. Protected by a submerged coral reef, its shallow water and calmer conditions make Little Parakeet Bay the perfect option for smaller children and young families.

The jagged rock formations that litter the bay make for a dramatic backdrop, standing in strong contrast to the slow, leisurely pace on the beach.

Little Parakeet Bay’s clear blue water is home to a vast array of sea life. Dive under the surface and discover small blue-scaled fish (Miller’s damsel fish — a favourite with the little ones), sea stars, and perhaps even the odd stingray.

Where to find Little Parakeet Bay

Little Parakeet Bay is on the Quokka Coaches Island Explorer bus route — just hop off at Stop 18 and walk the last few hundred metres. Less than 3 km away from the Thomson Bay settlement, it’s an easy 10-minute cycle through the centre of the island, or a relaxing 35-minute walk around the top end of the island.

An underwater snorkelling paradise

Calm, shallow water makes for ideal swimming and diving conditions. Protected from prevailing winds, the water here isn’t as energetic as other spots on the island — meaning there’s excellent snorkelling to be found.

Further out into the bay, a long coral reef provides exquisite formations to explore. The more intrepid divers can duck down into deeper chasms, and meet varieties of fish of all shapes and sizes.

The reef itself runs around the island to Parakeet Bay, so grab your fins and snorkel, set up your spot for the day, and enjoy the beauty of Little Parakeet Bay.

There are no facilities available at Little Parakeet Bay, but it’s just a 10-minute walk (or 3 km cycle) away from the Geordie Bay facilities.

Shore-based fishing is permitted by means of a rod and line, or hand-held line.

There are no barbecue facilities present at Little Parakeet Bay — so be sure to bring a picnic rug, food, and drinks with you.
