Wadjemup’s iconic beach has space for everyone

Taking its title as one of the widest and longest stretches of beach on the island, Pinky Beach is known for its gorgeous swimming conditions. The safe, calm waters are shielded from south, southwest, and west winds, and being only a few minutes’ walk away from the main settlement, it's the ideal place for families.

A sheltered bay and undulating coral reef make it the perfect start for beginner snorkellers to discover Wadjemup / Rottnest Island’s underwater stories.

Views of the historic Bathurst Lighthouse provide a scenic backdrop to a long, lazy afternoon. But it’s the vibrant sunsets that really bring the crowds. Pinky Beach has built a reputation as being the best place on the island to watch the sun dip slowly over the ocean. So come for the day — and stay for the sunsets.

Just up the stairs and over the dunes you’ll find Pinky's Rottnest Island (previously Pinky’s Beach Club), a place to refresh and revive with top class food and drinks. Expansive views of the ocean offer stunning sunset scenes — and, at the right time of the year, you might even see some whales frolicking further out to sea.

Where to find Pinky Beach

Located on the northern side of the island, Pinky Beach can be found within close proximity to The Basin, just a short 10-minute walk from the main settlement—and even quicker by bike.

The stairs between Pinky Beach and Bathurst Lighthouse will be closed for repairs from June to November 2024. A detour from the Gabbi Karniny Bidi Walk Trail is in place.

Shining a light out to sea

Bathurst Lighthouse is one of the most iconic Rottnest Island views. Built in 1900 to support the established Wadjemup Lighthouse, the structure itself began in sad circumstances.

In 1899, City of York hit a reef off the western coast of Wadjemup and sank with 11 lives lost. An inquiry into the incident determined that the guiding light wasn’t enough — and so the Bathurst Lighthouse was established.

20 metres high, the stark white brick structure works with Wadjemup Lighthouse and the Fremantle Lighthouse to form a navigation triangle to help avoid future maritime disasters.

While the lighthouse runs automatically and is closed to visitors, it’s one of the highest points on the island. Its scenic outlook provides an opportunity for some iconic Wadjemup photos, including the famous sunsets of Pinky Beach.

The closest public toilet facilities to Pinky Beach are at the Stay Rottnest Campground or at The Basin.

While you can’t stay precisely at Pinky Beach (in fact camping on any beach on the island is illegal), there is accommodation close by. Glamping accommodation is available just over the dunes at Discovery Rottnest Island. Stay Rottnest Campground is also just a stone’s throw away.

While hand line and reel fishing is allowed at Pinky Beach, there’s better fishing to be had elsewhere on the island.
