Experience the wonder of Wadjemup / Rottnest Island these school holidays with unforgettable adventures for the whole family!

The Rottnest Voluntary Guides Association (RVGA) have an exciting lineup of free activities and tours. Kids will love exploring the island’s natural wonders, unique wildlife, and significant history.

This summer, get ready for exciting Thursday night activities! Hop on the night train to Oliver Hill on 23 January and join the ever-popular RVGA Family Quiz Nights on 9 and 16 January. Bookings are essential, so make sure to secure your tickets!.

The summer school holiday program runs from Sunday 5 January to Friday 24 January 2025.

All tours and activities in the program are free, suitable for all ages, and last for approximately one hour unless otherwise stated.

The Night Train to Oliver Hill  

Thursday 23 January  

Train departs at 6:45 pm and returns at 9:15 pm 

A special, one off, summer holiday event. A unique opportunity to ride the train to Oliver Hill at night. Bring a picnic, enjoy a beautiful sunset, some entertainment, a tour of the night sky and watch as Perth lights up from horizon to horizon.

The RVGA Family Quiz Night 

Thursday 9 & 16 January  

From 7 pm at the Rottnest Island Golf Course 

The Family Quiz Night is a fun night out for the whole family, with great prizes up for grabs! Make up your own tables of eight or come and join a table at this popular family event.

Places for the Night Train and Family Quiz Night are limited so bookings are essential. Purchase your tickets from the Guides’ Information Booth, Monday to Thursday between 12:30 pm and 3 pm or email [email protected] to purchase tickets prior to your arrival.

20 Questions Challenge  

A detective trail challenge for the whole family. Follow the clues to find the answers. Winners go into the draw for a prize each Thursday. There’s a new challenge each week, pick up your entry forms at the RVGA Information Booth next to the Island Gypsy.

Beach Discovery  

This one is for the budding marine biologists! Explore the beach as you collect and discover secrets of the sea. 

Behind the Scenes  

Join this guided bike tour, departing from the RVGA Information Booth and cycling approximately 4.5 km to The Basin, Longreach Bay and Geordie Bay. Please bring your own bike and don't forget your helmet.

Bickley Battery Walk  

Bike, hike or bus to Kingstown Barracks. Meet your guide at the Gun Barrel on the Parade Ground and explore the remnants of the WWII coastal defences. 

Birds & Beasts of Rottnest  

Take a walk on the wild side! Meet some of Rottnest Island’s amazing birds, reptiles, and mammals in their natural habitats. Binoculars will be available. 

Mysteries & Legends  

Stroll through the settlement at night, meet characters from the Island’s rich history and hear their stories. Don’t forget your torch! 

Night Skies  

Look at the planets and stars and hear about the wonders of the beautiful Rottnest Island night sky. Don’t forget your torch! 

Pirate Pete  

Join Pirate Pete’s crew and learn about the mysteries of the deep blue sea, and hunt for hidden treasure! 

Quokka Tales  

‘Okka the Quokka’ Stories and colouring in. An educational and entertaining activity suitable for the young and young at heart. 

Sand Sculptures by the Sea  

Put your creative skills to work at the Sand Sculpture challenge. Use only the sand and what nature provides on the beach to create your very own work of art. Look out for the banner on the beach indicating where to get to work. 

Sunset at Vlamingh Lookout 

Take a twilight stroll up to Vlamingh Lookout for an unforgettable view of the sun setting over the salt lakes. Along the way, hear stories about the island’s history, the first settlers, and the Dutch explorers and more. Don’t forget your camera! 

What’s Behind Geordie Bay?  

A guided walk along the coastal strip between Geordie Bay and Little Parakeet Bay for a look at some of the island’s unique biodiversity and natural features, returning along the coastal track that winds its way back to Geordie Bay.

There are endless ways to burn off the school holiday energy at Rottnest Island and there’s no better place to start than by exploring the incredible beaches and bays.

Hire a bike from Pedal & Flipper Hire and tour the island’s cycle paths and roads past stunning scenery. But if riding a bike isn’t your thing, you can't beat a tour on a revolutionary set of wheels with Segway Tours WA (suitable for kids over the age of 12).

See the island from a different perspective by hopping on one of bus tours with Quokka Coaches and Rottnest Express to help you explore the island from the comfort of a bus. Or enjoy the island at your own pace with the Island Explorer hop-on-hop-off bus.

For a cultural experience, head to the Wadjemup Museum for Children for an educational adventure or Wadjemup Museum to explore the island’s history. While you’re there, check out the latest exhibition, Wadjemup Wirin Bidi, that shares stories of the island’s Aboriginal prisoners and includes an audiovisual display in the theatrette featuring spiritual Noongar stories of Wadjemup.

Kids can also fill their days with mini-golf and retro arcade games as well as catching one of the latest new release movies at Rottnest Movies and Mini Golf or roll up for a few rounds of barefoot lawn bowls the whole family will enjoy.
